SUMMARY OF KEY CHANGES

As of 1 July 2015:

  • Individuals will have 12 months to lodge a complaint with the Anti-Discrimination Commission;
  • The Anti-Discrimination Commission’s hearing function will be transferred to the Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The Anti-Discrimination Commission:

  • Will have a new streamlined complaint process; that will be quicker.
  • Will be able to compel attendance by parties at an early conciliation to encourage early resolution of a complaint
  • Will have the option to compel production of documents and witnesses
  • Will require representative parties (including lawyers, advocates and support persons) to obtain permission to act on an individual’s behalf, including at conciliation.
