National Press Club Speech

Date: 08 July 2014

Graeme Innes AM, Disability Discrimination Commissioner and long-time supporter of the NT ADC gave his final speech as Commissioner at the National Press Club on Wednesday 2 July 2014. Graeme’s appointment ends on 4 July 2014.

Whilst the speech contained Graeme’s fabulous mix of humour, his personal experience and the stories of others that he has gathered, it contained serious messages for the need for advocacy and spotlight on the daily discrimination faced by people in our community living with a disability. Particularly the need for a plan to ensure work places are disability confident, so that the level of employment of people with a disability increases. It also highlighted the ongoing need for Disability Justice Plans in each jurisdiction to move forward in ensuring that people with a disability are equal before the law, particularly for those coming into contact with the criminal justice system either as witnesses, or offenders.
